Spotlight Friday With Jazmin Portnow of Anyvent Event Planning

This week we interviewed event planner Jazmin Portnow. She loves all the relationships she makes on a daily basis. “Whether it be the amazing “friendors” who have become family over the years, or the awesome couples who trust me with their vision.”

How did you get your start in the Event Planning Industry?

I began planning events for residents as part of my job as a Property Manager at various luxury properties in NYC. When I relocated with my husband to Charlottesville, VA for his PhD program, I found my career in property management a lot less challenging than in New York and quickly began thinking of new ways to fill my time. Once I found out that Charlottesville was one of the top wedding destinations in the country, the writing seemed like it was on the wall. 6 years later we are still going strong and are loving every moment of it!

What is your favorite part of the industry?

I absolutely love the fact that my work allows me to meet so many wonderful people on a daily basis. Whether it be the amazing “friendors” who have become family over the years, or the awesome couples who trust me with their vision, I feel truly lucky that my passion allows me to develop such amazing relationships.

What are your favorite wedding trends this year?

Hanging installations will never get old for me! I also enjoy the fact that people are spending more on guest experience and personal details.

What is the biggest change you have seen since the start of your career?

I think that couples are trying to tell their love stories a bit more throughout their wedding day (which I LOVE). It’s not just about throwing a pretty event, it’s about couples spending quality time with their guests which is why I think the rise of full wedding weekend experiences have risen over the years.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever recieved?

Never compare your start to someone else’s end. I think that as a business owner, it is so easy to compare yourself and your work to everyone else’s. You fall down the rabbit hole of “why haven’t I done a wedding at that venue yet?” or “how has this person been featured in so many publications?”. The more energy that you exert comparing yourself to others and worrying about how much better someone may or may not be doing than you is less energy that you have to work on yourself and your business.
